Metal
My first teachers in metalworking were Shirley Ogilvy and Chris Gearin (RIP) in evening classes in the mid-1990s at the University of Sydney where I was studying Arts. We began with lost wax casting. This means making a shape in wax which is transformed into metal via a mould.
Carving and modelling wax (and later other materials) feels more natural to me than fabricating metal (cutting, hitting and soldering and welding it), although I have done much more of the latter since those days. Most of my metal jewellery has been made from silver, titanium and aluminium. Having learned industrial blacksmithing I am also familiar with steel. . . perhaps it is time steel jewellery came into more prominence in the world.
